Innovation
We are committed to embracing new technologies and fostering innovation throughout our value chain. This is evident in the nascent area of 5G, where StarHub moved early to establish ourselves as a market leader. 5G, which offers greater speeds, capacity, and connectivity, enables digital-first solutions for a smarter, safer and more sustainable society.
Taking the opportunity to support the sharing economy, we rolled out our 5G standalone network through our joint venture, Antina, on the 3.5GHz spectrum in a more sustainable manner by collaborating with another mobile network operator. Under the partnership, we will expand and enhance the 5G standalone network with the additional 2.1GHz spectrum which we secured in 2021. Network sharing with our partner allows us to avoid the duplication of infrastructure, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of our 5G service offerings.
We have made significant strides in Digital+Green initiatives, forging partnerships to ideate, create, and deliver smart and sustainable solutions.
StarHub seeks to reduce our own carbon footprint as well as that of our customers by leveraging 5G, IoT, data analytics, and multi-cloud strategies. Through our Green Tech solutions launched in 2022, we empower our enterprise customers to access and harness the power of cloud and data in driving their own digital transformation and green transition.
Rainfall Project with PUB and H2i
We are collaborating with Public Utilities Board (PUB) and water technology scale-up Hydroinformatics Institute (H2i) to repurpose StarHub’s ubiquitous network of mobile base stations as “opportunistic” rainfall sensors to analyse the impact of rain on mobile signal strength. The aim is to develop an accurate and cost-effective rainfall monitoring system to enable PUB to obtain accurate data on rainfall intensities, to better prepare for heavy rain and flash floods.
Singapore’s first solar-powered outdoor 5G WiFi deployment for NUS
We rolled out Singapore’s first 100% solar-powered outdoor WiFi over StarHub 5G on campus, in partnership with the National University of Singapore Information Technology Department in 2022. To date, more than 90 wireless access points have been installed, offering wireless connectivity at outdoor spaces across three NUS campuses. This initiative has helped the university optimise power consumption and network performance of its outdoor wireless network and reduced network deployment time and cost with the elimination of laying underground power and fibre cables.
Further to that, both organisations are working together to establish Singapore’s pioneering “Borderless University”, enhancing network connectivity to elevate the teaching and learning experience and boost the university’s capability for driving innovations in various areas. This partnership envisions a future where NUS students and staff will enjoy ultra-fast, uninterrupted network connectivity throughout Singapore, facilitated by a dedicated private Enterprise 5G data network which can play a crucial role in enabling sustainable practices. To improve sustainability, private 5G networks can for example be configured to prioritise energy efficiency, support a wide range of IoT devices and sensors that monitor and control energy use, emissions and other environmental factors, ensure secure handling of sensitive information.
To maintain the integrity of our information systems, we are committed to preventing data breaches and fortifying our defence against cyber threats, integrating appropriate safeguards into our data, system, and network protection processes.
To safeguard both enterprises and consumers from growing cyber threats, we have introduced a comprehensive suite of cybersecurity services and solutions, to give our customers peace of mind online.
For consumers, this includes CyberProtect, an all-in-one protection service which integrates antivirus and virtual private network access, and CyberCover, a cyber protection policy designed to provide financial support for customers affected by identity theft, unauthorised transactions, cyber-bullying and more.
For enterprises, we have Mobile Threat Defence, Internet Clean Pipe, Managed SASE, and Backup-as-a-service for Microsoft 365. These solutions help businesses to provide mobile security service for corporate-owned and BYOD devices, detect and prevent Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDOS) attacks, consolidate their networking and security services on the cloud, and store their data safely.
Information and communication technology contributes to sustainability by leveraging data, automation, and connectivity to help optimise the use of resources, reduce waste, and promote practices across various industries and communities.
StarHub and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Bring 5G Edge to Businesses
Partnering with Hewlett Packard Enterprise, we in November 2021 launched the 5G Multi-access Edge Computing (5G MEC) solution, which helps organisations and government clients make faster and smarter decisions through next generation automation, mission-critical communications and data analytics. With this, customers in latency sensitive environments, such as high precision manufacturing and autonomous transportation, can make split-second business decisions based on real-time analytics.
StarHub, Software AG partner to launch new 5G IoT platform service
We launched the StarHub 5G IoT Platform Service, a one-stop solution that allows organisations to aggregate all their existing IoT applications and connected devices on a single platform. For example, a public transport operator can perform real-time vehicle tracking, automated inspection of the conditions of its fleet, and predict potential issues pre-emptively.
